Secular Music Related to Gospel Topics

"Fire Away" is found on track 9 on Niall Horan's debut album "Flicker," released back in 2017. Horan reveals that this single is about being open and honest in your relationships. Sometimes when life comes flying at you sideways, it’s easy to shut your loved ones out while dealing with the mess. It is important that we let them in, let them listen, and let them help.

Now let's take a look into the lyrics of the song and relate it to the Gospel Topics of Prayer, building a relationship with our Heavenly Father, and putting our trust in Him.

You keep saying that you're alright

But I can see it through your fake smile, you're not

There's a reservoir in your eyes

That you've been holding back a long time, what's wrong?

Hold me close but at a distance

Thinking I don't ever listen, but I do

I know sometimes it gets confusing

You might be lost, but I ain't losing you

And I will steady your hand

When you're losing your grip

And even if I don't understand

You can talk to me

Oftentimes, in our life, we like to hold everything in. We pretend that everything is okay and that we dont need help. I'm sure we all have someone in our life that knows us and can tell just by the look on our faces or the tone in our voice that something is off. I sure know I do. Well, the truth is, we all sure have one person. Our Heavenly Father knows each of us. He knows you. He is all-knowing and knows us better than we know ourselves. It is easy to doubt that truth, especially when we are at very vulnerable points in our life. That is why we have been given Prayer. A sacred and personal form of communication, to call unto the Heavens and reach our Father there, to let Him and seek out help and guidance. In the October 2020 General Conference, Brother Milton Camargo, First Counselor in the Sunday School General Presidency, shared his thoughts on seeking out our Heavenly Father, saying, “The world can also be harsh and heartbreaking. But as we open our hearts in prayer, we will feel the comfort that comes from our Father in Heaven and the assurance that He loves and values us.

Darling, you don't have to hold it

You don't have to be afraid

You can go ahead and unload it

'Cause you know it'll be okay

Fire away (x4)

The chorus of this song aligns perfectly well with the truths we are taught in the Book of Mormon, in the book of Mosiah, chapter 24, verse 14. This verse says, “And I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs, even while you are in bondage; and this will I do that ye may stand as witnesses for me hereafter, and that ye may know of a surety that I, the Lord God, do visit my people in their afflictions.” We are reminded in this verse, this song, and many times throughout the scriptures and the words of living Prophets that the Lord hears us, and invites us to unload our burdens unto Him, that they may be lightened. This doesn't mean that He will take the away completely. This means that we will come by our side and help us carry them. The Lord wants to help us and mend us.

I have had many times in my life where I know that my Heavenly Father has been telling me to "fire away," or let go of my worries and let Him in. While serving a Mission for Christ of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Quetzaltenango, I was going through a really hard time. About 4 months in, I was having companionship problems, a hard time learning the language, and felt mentally drained. I can remember one day, just trying to hold it all together, when I then finally went into my room and broke down. I remember just praying and “firing away,” laying everything out on the table, and Letting Heavenly Father take over. I know He was listening to me and waiting for me to put my full trust in Him to hear me and take care of me.

I hope that through this post, you were able to see God’s hand in even the smallest and simple everyday things. Heavenly Father loves you, and is talking to you, in more ways than you know!

Have a safe and blessed week!
