Writing a video script for the first time was a fun but eye-opening experience! I knew there would be challenges, but I learned so much more than I expected along the way. Here’s a look at some things I learned that I didn’t know before.

Understanding How to Keep It Short and Clear

One big lesson was the importance of keeping things short and simple. When I started, I wanted to include everything I could think of, but I realized that too much detail can actually make a video hard to follow. Viewers want key points, not a lecture. I learned that every word counts and that it’s better to say more with less.

Writing for the Ear, Not the Eye

Another thing I hadn’t thought about was how different it is to write something that will be spoken rather than read. When people read, they can go back and reread if they need to, but in a video, they only have one chance to catch what’s being said. This means the language needs to be super clear and easy to understand. I learned to write in a way that sounds natural and keeps things moving.

Visual Cues and Timing

While writing the script, I also had to think about the visuals—what people would be seeing while they listen. This was new for me! I learned that scripts are more than just words; they are part of a bigger plan that includes images, actions, and transitions. Adding in visual cues, like “show close-up of hands” or “cut to next scene,” was something I didn’t expect but found really helpful.

Working with Feedback

Lastly, I learned that feedback is my friend. Sharing my script with others helped me see parts that needed improvement. Things that made sense in my head sometimes sounded confusing to others, so getting feedback made my script better. I learned to be open to suggestions and make changes without taking it personally.

Writing my first video script taught me a lot about planning, timing, and thinking about the viewer’s experience. It was a challenge, but now I have a clearer idea of what goes into a great video script. If you’re writing a script for the first time, remember to keep it simple, write for the ear, and think about the visuals. Most importantly, be open to feedback—your script will only get better from it!
